Klingler College of Arts and Sciences Award Recipients
A PERSON FOR OTHERS AWARD
Dr. Louis A. Faillace, Arts '54, Med '57
Houston
While studying at Marquette, Louis never forgot the message from the Jesuits to give back to the community, especially the poor. He’s spent his career doing just that.
Louis has had quite the distinguished career. In 1971 he was named the founding chair of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at McGovern Medical School, Houston, now the sixth largest medical school in the United States. He played a key role in many important clinical affiliations and decisions in the formative years of the school.
In 2003 he helped found Spring Branch Community Health Center in Houston, a neighborhood-based health center that operates with the financial support of churches, private donations and federal grants. Louis and the other founders were concerned about the high number of non-emergency visits to area hospitals and the high number of pregnant women without access to prenatal care.
The center has expanded to five locations around Houston, providing family medical services, pediatric, behavioral health services, prenatal care, women’s health services and dental services. Louis is a member of the center’s board of directors, and volunteers there by helping the poor get quality health care.
Louis received his medical degree from Marquette’s School of Medicine, was an assistant resident at Bellevue Hospital, New York, in psychiatry and completed research fellowships at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and Harvard University. In addition, he did additional residencies in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins.
“ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵchanged my life and taught me to seek excellence and give back to the community,” Louis says. “This award is a tribute to how much ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵsucceeded.”
Fun fact: Louis’s spiritual adviser at ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵwas Rev. William Dooley, S.J. Father Dooley encouraged Louis to become a teacher and a leader.
